London based charity, Made in Europe, have appointed Dezign Fanatics to help develop their brand and core fundraising campaign. "MADE", is much more than a regular charity. It’s main aim is to encourage young muslims to put their faith into practice and provides resource for campaigning, educating and volunteering, to address global issues such food crisis, infant deaths, climate change etc. The project involves branding philosophy & identity guidelines, and a concept which aims to change behaviour, attract volunteers and request donations. A restricted budget adds to the challenge of the project, but one the Fanatics could not resist due to the mirroring belief that charity on its own, for which the muslim community is extremely generous with, is not enough on its own.

Terror knows no limits and comes in all forms, unofficial and official. We all remember 9/11 and 7/7. For the people living in Gaza on 27/12/2009 was no different.

Dezign Fanatics was so moved by the indiscriminate and disproportionate attack on civilians in the area that they immediately made their services both offline and online available on a pro-bono basis to client Islamic Relief, which happens to be a major NGO in the area. An incredible £3 million was raised in a matter of weeks by the charity.

One year on, Islamic Relief did not look far for a creative agency to drive its campaign to thank donators and provide feedback on how the funds have been distributed, as well highlighti the need for further donation for much needed initiatives to rebuild lives and infrastructure in Gaza.

The Fanatics delivery utilised reportage photography, bold and gritty type, and angled graphic devices to emphasize the disrupted life of ordinary people. The one year on campaign achieved a total of £350,000 in a 4 week period. For more information - visit

Dezign Fanatics promotes itself as ethical design agency working with a wide variety of socially driven organisations. Recently Creative Director, Khalid Raza, decided to go a few steps further (literally), and undertake a difficult long distance trek to Everest (Base Camp) in order to raise funds for Islamic Relief.

The trek which took place in December 2008 consisted of 14 volunteers walking for 12 days at high altitude to reach Everest Base Camp (5600 meters). Each days walk varied from 5 to 9 hours. The difficulty was reflected when two member fell ill and had to be lifted out of the area by helicopter. The team stayed in basic lodges, and at the top were faced with oxygen levels of only 40% and minus zero temperatures.

It was however all worth the effort with the groups total fund-raising reaching over 100k. Most the funds will go towards clean water and adequate sanitation projects to prevent 2.2 million children dying every year from not having access to clean or adequate sanitation. Khalid Raza commented - "what we had to endure was only a fraction of what the most vulnerable people have to go through on a daily basis. In the next three minutes alone 10 children will die from dirty water which carries deadly diseases like cholera and dysentery, simple because they have nothing else to drink. These situations are intolerable and it’s not right."

So what’s next for Khalid? "Not sure, but it will have to be something special to beat this - maybe climb Everest (joking)".

Islamic Relief - the UK’s largest Muslim charity gets excited about its campaigns.

And why not! At a time when most UK charities have seen donations fall, mainly due to the economic downturn - one charity is bucking the trend. Islamic Relief - a member of the government endorsed DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) has seen an upturn in its figures. Its 2008 Ramadan campaign and new website coincided with contributions increasing from £3.2 million in 2007 to £4.4 million this year. The website - designed by Dezign Fanatics, saw online donations increase by 34% during Ramadan 2008.The success of the Ramadan Campaign, which Dezign Fanatics was one of the creative suppliers involved - saw them winning the delivery of the Islamic Relief UK’s Qurbani Campaign. Early figures continue to show an increase in donations.

Islamic Relief’s investment in professional creative communication in it’s ask seems to be paying dividends, and this may see other Muslim Charities following suit.

"We have enjoyed working with IRUK. It’s been challenging and intense - what has made it fun is the fact that we are learning so much about the client and their operation, and watching them grow too. Success is incredibly important as the people that really benefit are those in need." (Khalid Raza, Creative Director, Dezign Fanatics) For more information - visit www.islamic-relief.co.uk

The start of 2009 saw the launch of the Scottish Spina Bifida Association website.

The SSBA is a very specific charity, and is seen as Scotland’s voice for spina bifida, hydrocephalus and related conditions. Its purpose built Family Support Centre provides an unprecedented service that is further enhanced by outreach support across the country. When Dezign Fanatics was invited to design their new web site they jumped at the chance. The end result is unorthodox - a structure that is built around the customer base - the community, partners and the general public. SSBA enviable list of corporate events, such the Gordon Ramsay Dinner, Burns Supper and Ladies Lunch, and the importance of supporters are not lost in the site - taking a focal position on the Home page. The site is balanced between being useful internally and appealing externally. In many ways it is in line with what someone like Gordon Ramsay - the Honorary patron of the SSBA would have cooked up.

Deborah Roe, Head of Fund-raising commented, "We were delighted to work with Dezign Fanatics whilst reviewing our web site. They took time to understand our requirements, defining all the different sectors that we work with, and then created a unique and exciting interface that is really working well for us"
